Our story

Sablé d’Asnelles®, a speciality of the village of Asnelles in Calvados, has been a Normandy institution for over 120 years.

It was back in 1904 when the legendary recipe, handed down from owner to owner, came to fruiten from the then baker Charles Bansard.

For a long time the shortbread was known as “Sablés Bansard”, but reference to Asnelles dates back to the 29th of December 1912 in a newspaper article in La Croix d Bessin. It was in 1983, when Antoine Cormier took over the business, that the biscuit factory adopted the name “Les Sablés d’Asnelles” and then diversified.

Les Sablés d’Asnelles ® – road works in 1904.

The biscuit factory has been run since 2017 by two enthusiasts, Jean-François Otter et Armel Garnier.

It is located in Asnelles, near Gold Beach between Arromanches and Courseulles on the D514 coastal road and historic sites of the D-Day landings, with its beaches and still-visible artificial harbour.

What a pleasure it is to see your eyes sparkle just at the moment of tasting.

All of this while keeping the authenticity and traditional know-how of the biscuit factory, we offer you products made from quality raw materials, sourced locally, free from GMOs or preservatives and containing PDO-certified Isigny butter and free-range eggs coming from one of our partner suppliers, Aurélien Salmon.

We produce and pack by hand on average 18 000 shortbread biscuits per day and crack 1,500 eggs by hand each week.

We have been welcoming you to our new store in Sir Alexander Stanier place since 2020 with a tea room and a grocery corner selling regional products such as cider, chocolates and toffee caramels.

Everyday we make pastries from our famous shortbread dough:

And there’s so much more!

You can also visit our laboratory (booking required) to get a better sense of the history of the biscuit factory and the baking process of our shortbread biscuits.

As an active local player, we regularly take part in trade fairs for the wider public and for professionals, such as FENO in Caen (taking place every two years).

Our local « CSE » commitment

Since 2023, we have been committed to sustainable and responsible development through our RSE = Responsibility Social & Environment policy.

We deploy our energy every day to integrate social and environmental issues into our business, acting in accordance with our values.

Humanity and goodwill
are the watchwords of our biscuit factory

The health and well-being of our employees is our top priority, and we regularly invest in new equipment to reduce drudgery in the workplace. We are also attentive to the needs of each employee, helping them to find the right balance between their private and professional lives.

We support and train our employees internally to align their objectives with those of the company, and every year we take on young graduates through internships and work-study contracts.

We strive to be consistent in our salary policy and regularly organize employee get-togethers.

Social inclusion

We are proud to have a team made up of 20% disabled people.

Since 2022, we have been collaborating with the ESAT Les Compagnons de Bayeux, which, following the implementation of a sanitary approval, packages part of our shortbread production in their workshop.

Strong local roots!

Located in the heart of Asnelles, all our biscuits and pastries are made on site. We give priority to the local economy, sourcing 90% of our raw materials from the region, such as Isigny PDO butter, Notre basse-cour eggs from Bonnemaison, Normandy flour and red fruit from Vergers du Grand Parc.

60% of our biscuits are sold directly in our boutique, and 88% of our retailers are located in Normandy, 70% of them in Calvados.

The creation of our new shop was part of our desire to offer local residents a meeting place to strengthen social ties in the village and make a positive contribution to the local dynamic.

We also play a key role in community life, supporting local associations  and organizing visits to our patisserie laboratory.

Our environmental commitment

Our production site is currently powered 100% by green energy, and we are constantly striving to optimize our electricity consumption.

We are constantly working on reducing our packaging: most of our products have a 0% void rate, and we have reduced the thickness of our product packaging film by over 40%.

We are constantly fighting against waste: 100% of our shipping cartons are made of FSC Mixed recycled cardboard, and we reuse all shipping materials that can be reused.

We produce zero food waste, overcooked or broken products are sold downgraded, and unsold goods are distributed free of charge to our employees or to associations.

In September 2023, we joined the joint plan for the prevention and eco-design of household packaging via our partner CITEO.
